DR., GÉOGR. Arrière-pays, région qui s'étend à l'intérieur des terres ou au-delà d'un territoire occupé. Anton. littoral, bande, région côtière. Zone d'hinterland; hinterland d'une possession coloniale, d'un port de mer. La Chaussée prolifère : son hinterland boisé s'abandonne au lotissement, au ciment armé, et engendre une cité de villas charmantes entourées de jardins (MORAND, Bucarest, 1935, p. 182). Les ports de la Méditerranée qui, comme Marseille, Gênes et Trieste disposent dans leur hinterland rapproché de raffineries de pétrole et de vastes industries annexes (BENOIST, PETTIER, Transp. mar., 1961, p. 180) :
